Allspice is a small tree berry, brown and rough after drying. Its fragrance recalls cloves, cinnamon and other spices, though it is a single ingredient rather than a mixture.

Also known as Jamaica pepper, it is gathered, dried and ground to season food. The whole berries look modest beside more colourful goods, but crushing a few releases their rich scent. Their round shape distinguishes them from the fleshy chillies also traded under names containing the word pepper.
