Medicinal aloes is concentrated aloe juice, sold in dark, brittle pieces. Brown to almost black on the outside, it can break to reveal a glossy surface with yellowish patches. It is intensely bitter.

Apothecaries buy it to make purgatives, checking the colour, cleanliness and texture of each lot. The juice is collected from the aloe's fleshy leaves and concentrated until it forms a solid mass. Despite the similar name, this medicinal substance is quite different from the fragrant timber known as aloeswood.
