Ambergris is an aromatic animal substance that looks like grey or brown wax, sometimes marbled and flecked with dark grains. It is shipped in lumps whose unassuming appearance gives little hint of their value to a perfumer.

It lends its scent to expensive perfumes and apothecaries' preparations. Pieces are found floating at sea or washed ashore. Ambergris comes from the sperm whale, though its origins remain mysterious to many merchants. They judge what lies before them by its smell, texture and colour.
