Export regions

Camphor is a light, white substance obtained from trees, with a penetrating smell that escapes as soon as a container is opened. It gradually vanishes when exposed to the air, making careful packing essential.

Apothecaries buy it for medicinal preparations. It is obtained from certain Asian trees and may be purified before sale. By the late seventeenth century, Dutch refiners sell flat, round cakes packed with linseed to reduce losses. Such packing helps a volatile substance survive storage and a long sea passage.
