Export regions

Cardamom is shipped in pale, ribbed pods containing small, dark seeds. The pods protect the spice within; opening one releases its fragrance.

Both cooks and apothecaries use the seeds. In Ceylon they can flavour sweet rice provisions. The fruits are harvested from the plant and dried for trade, usually leaving the seeds inside their husks. A dull-looking pod can therefore hold the most valuable part of the cargo.
