Chiloé pepper consists of the aromatic berries of the South American canelo tree. These small, dark fruits are a separate product from the fragrant bark taken from the same tree.

Crushing the berries releases the scent and pungency that make them useful as a seasoning. They are gathered from the tree after flowering. Their name suggests a flavour, but the cargo is botanically distinct from the peppercorns grown on Asian vines.
