Cotton is a soft white fibre packed into bales for shipment. In its raw state it resembles down, with seeds and other unwanted material to be removed before spinning.

It is spun and woven into fabrics and clothing, and also used as stuffing. The fibres grow around seeds inside the cotton plant's bolls. Harvesting, cleaning, spinning and weaving each require work; a bale on the quay is still several stages away from the cloth a buyer will see on a market stall.
