Elephant tusks supply ivory in long, curved pieces with a rough outer surface. Cutting and polishing reveal the pale, dense material beneath.

Carvers and turners make handles, gaming pieces, figurines and luxury objects from it. The tusk's size and curve determine what can be made: several small pieces cannot always replace one large, sound section. African trading networks bring the tusks to coastal ports, still recognisably part of an animal, before distant workshops transform them into finished goods.
