Export regions

Ethiopian pepper is an African tree spice traded as dark, narrow, knobbly fruits resembling little pods. Each contains several seeds; breaking a fruit releases its strong aroma.

The fruits are gathered and dried for spice merchants and apothecaries. Drying deepens their dark colour, while their pod-like shape distinguishes them from round Asian peppercorns and the fleshy chillies brought from the Americas.
