Frankincense, also called olibanum, is a fragrant gum-resin. It travels as pale or amber tears and fragments, with resin dust gathering wherever the pieces rub together.

It is burned in ceremonies and to perfume rooms, and apothecaries also use it in their preparations. Gatherers collect the hardened resin from trees and sort it for shipment. Heating a small piece releases the fragrance that gives this otherwise modest-looking cargo its value.
