Export regions

Guinea sorrel is an edible hibiscus with sour leaves and a fleshy red calyx around its fruit. It is distinct from the sorrel grown in European gardens.

The leaves are cooked as a vegetable, while the calyces give colour and acidity to other preparations. What has been harvested matters: a lot of leaves and a lot of calyces have different appearances and uses. Cultivated in tropical regions, the plant travels along routes linking Africa with other lands; its name recalls its sharp taste.
