Gum benjamin, also known as benzoin, is a fragrant resin, shipped in small droplets known as tears or in larger reddish-brown and amber lumps. Some pieces are mottled with white, like almonds set in a paste.

Perfumers use it in scented pastilles and mixtures for burning, and apothecaries buy it for their preparations. Warming a piece releases its sweet scent. The resin seeps from cuts in a tree's bark and hardens before it is collected. Siam and Sumatra are among the places supplying this trade.
