Indigo is a blue dyestuff shipped in dry cakes, deep blue to violet in colour. The blocks bear little resemblance to the green leaves from which their colour is extracted.

Dyers use it to colour cloth; painters and some laundry trades also buy it. Processing the leaves releases the colouring matter, which is collected and dried into cakes. The cargo has already passed through considerable work before reaching the dyer, who must prepare it again to transfer the blue to fabric.
