Japanese porcelain is shipped as finished tableware and vessels, decorated in blue and white or with coloured enamels. Each piece has already been shaped, fired and decorated before it reaches the hold.

Arita workshops make wares for several markets, including European orders for objects such as coffee pots. Trade through Imari and Nagasaki brings them to Dutch merchants and onward to wealthy households and collectors. Some shapes reflect the wishes of customers far from the workshops that made them.
