Long pepper is traded as small brown spikes, each covered with tightly packed fruits. Their rough surface and elongated shape make them easy to distinguish from ordinary round peppercorns.

The dried spikes are ground for their pungency and used in apothecaries' preparations. Harvesting and drying preserve the whole shape for shipment. Once powdered, the spice is harder to identify, so a buyer may prefer to inspect and break a spike before judging the lot.
