Logwood is a dyewood with reddish heartwood, shipped in pieces stripped of their less useful outer wood. A fresh cut or a handful of shavings reveals the colour that interests the dyer.

It produces dark dyes, especially blacks and purples, and its timber also has uses in cabinetmaking. Along the Central American coast, woodcutters fell the trees, expose the heartwood and prepare it for shipment. A plain-looking load of logs connects those cutting camps with dyehouses across the Atlantic.
