Export regions

Nutmeg is an oval brown seed with a wrinkled surface and a marbled interior. Grating it releases the strong fragrance sought by cooks and apothecaries.

The tree also supplies mace, the separate covering removed when its fruit is opened. The Banda Islands and the Moluccas are central to this trade. Nutmegs are extracted and dried before shipment, arriving as whole spices that can keep their aroma until they are needed in the kitchen or the apothecary's shop.
