Export regions

Opium is a dark, bitter substance prepared from poppy sap. It may be shipped in compact cakes wrapped in poppy leaves, quite unlike the loose seeds sold from the same plant.

Apothecaries include it in preparations intended to ease pain and bring sleep. The latex is gathered from the seed capsules and worked into a thick mass before sale. A small cake represents a concentrated product that must be handled and measured by someone familiar with its strength.
