Pink peppercorns are small pink or red berries with a thin skin around a harder seed. Their colour stands out among brown spices and pale seeds, and the skin crushes easily between the fingers.

Crushing a berry releases its aroma. These fruits grow in clusters on a South American tree known as a pepper tree; they are quite different from the black peppercorns of an Asian climbing vine. The whole berry, its fragile skin and its scent help a buyer recognise the goods.
