Red dyewood is timber bought for the colour held in its heartwood. Aboard ship it looks much like any other load of wood; cutting it into chips prepares it for the dyehouse.

Dyers use it to colour cloth. The result depends on the wood and on how the dye is prepared, so a red cut surface does not guarantee the same shade on every fabric. West African trees supply this trade. They are felled, trimmed and prepared for shipment, then cut into smaller pieces near the place of use.
