Export regions

Sandalwood is a hard, heavy aromatic timber, shipped in pieces with the bark removed. A fresh cut in yellow sandalwood, also called citron sandalwood, releases the scent for which it is prized.

Perfumers and apothecaries buy the wood to cut into small pieces or grind for their preparations. The valuable heartwood is exposed and cut before shipment. Merchants distinguish yellow, white and red woods under the broad name of sandalwood, so the name alone does not identify an identical material in every lot.
