Export regions

Star anise is the dried fruit of a tree. Each brown, woody star holds a glossy seed in every point; breaking either the husks or the seeds releases a strong anise scent.

Imported from China, it flavours drinks and sweetmeats. In late seventeenth-century France it is still an unusual curiosity, while farther east it is used in tea and sherbet drinks. The fruits are picked and dried before shipment. Even among a crowded merchant's stock, their shape makes them easy to recognise.
