Tobacco arrives as prepared brown leaves, far removed from the green plant in the field. Damp leaves spoil; overly dry ones crumble. Handling and smelling a lot reveals its condition.

The leaves are picked, hung to dry and sorted for smoking or preparation as snuff. Depending on the trade, they may be twisted into ropes or packed in large casks. Merchants and manufacturers continue the preparation after shipment, turning the cured leaf into forms their customers prefer.
