Unwrought iron from Ávila supplies the workshops that forge Toledo's renowned weapons. Aboard ship it has none of a finished blade's polish: it is metal awaiting the armourer's judgement and skill.

The smith selects and works the iron, combining it with steel in the making of a blade. Toledo's reputation gives this plain-looking cargo an appeal beyond its appearance. Its journey links the ironworkers around Ávila to armourers whose swords will be worn far beyond Spain.
